The Best Puppy Training Advice

The Best Puppy Training Advice

Henri has been the best addition to our home. This is my first puppy as an adult and I have had a lot to learn over the last year. I wanted to share some of the advice I learned from friends, neighbors, and readers. I hope this helps give you better guidance when welcoming your own puppy into your home.

The Best Puppy Training Advice

It is a lot like having a toddler around. You want to give the puppy the best balance of food, sleep, and play. In return, your puppy will be the most loyal and loving companion. Henri is laying next to me while I type this.

The Best Puppy Training Advice

Socializing Your Dog

One of the first things we did with Henri after he was cleared from his shots was to let him play with other dogs. We are very lucky to have a lot of dogs in the neighborhood. Nearly every walk we take, he is able to run into a dog friend for a quick play.

It’s important to ask permission before letting your dog play with another dog. We have only run into one dog that wasn’t very friendly to Henri and snapped at him. I think I was more traumatized than Henri. Henri still wants to play with every dog we meet. Asking permission allows the other dog’s owner to give the go-ahead. It’s common courtesy and it helps keep your own dog safe. Some dogs just aren’t friendly towards puppies or certain size dogs.

Potty Training

Henri did pretty well at potty training. It took us a little while to get him fully potty trained. We had a few accidents on the stairs on the way out the door. I purchased this spray at our local grocery store which helped clean up the smell of an accident in the house so he didn’t revisit the same location.

Take potty breaks often. The more the dog gets used to a routine the better. Reward the good behavior with treats. Henri loves these treats and these treats the best. . I also learned to reward Henri with his own kibble. I put a ziplock bag in my pocket for walks and rewarded him with kibble for good behavior.

Take the water bowl up in between meals. He could drink water all day long but this also reduces the number of house accidents.

Put a bell on the front or back door to teach the puppy how to signal when he needs a potty break. Henri quickly learned this very quickly. Sometimes when he needs to go urgently, he will ring the bell loud and quickly.

Routine training for puppies

Routines Are Key

Routine training for puppies

Just like with toddlers, routines are key. Take your puppy for walks at the same time, schedule mealtime and playtime if you can. They will adjust to your schedule. I work out at 9:15 every morning and no matter what time Henri gets up, he is always ready for a nap around 9:15 right when I start class.

How to train a puppy

Find what activity your puppy loves best and use that as a form of play. Try to break up your day with playtimes to keep your puppy tired. Henri will start to chew things like chairs and our rug if he is bored. It’s a great nudge to get out of the house and go get some fresh air for a walk or a play session.

Henri loves playing fetch. We have a bunch of balls in the house for him to play with. If the weather is nice, we will go to the park and play ball. He does play without his leash in a quiet wooded area away from cars. I was very nervous about him running off and it took a little learning for both of us. I rewarded Henri with treats every time he came back to me instead of taking the opportunity to run in the other direction. The other distraction that will override my commands is his buddy Gibson who he will run anywhere to see.

Check with the vet before introducing people’s foods/new treats. Henri’s bread has a history of sensitive stomachs.

Puppies will grasp at anything for food. Make sure to keep an eye on them during walks so they don’t eat anything they aren’t supposed to. Having a dog in the city makes this much more of a challenge.

The Best Pupping Training Advice: Separation Anxiety

I think this is common with doodles and pandemic puppies. Henri loves being next to me and I love having him by my side. It is good to take some space from them throughout the day. Start slow and work your way up to more time. Leave the puppy in a different room while you work, work out, or sleep. It’s good for both of you. Even if you enjoy the company now, you will want freedom later. Henri loves his car rides to the grocery store and errands. I do leave him at home depending on my schedule.

We originally crate-trained Henri. I bought two inexpensive crates online. We used one for when we were away from the house and the other was used for sleeping. I had to visit my dad in Ohio and bring Henri, it was his first time alone and I was so nervous he would destroy the house while I was gone. He ended up sleeping the whole time in the crate while the door was open. We tried to make the crate feel like a safe space for Henri. Toys and blankets help.

Try your best not to put your puppy in the crate when he is bad.

This will break the safe space feeling and comfort of the crate.

We didn’t let Henri sleep out of the bed until his first birthday. I bought a bed at Target that he sleeps on most of the time. He does make his way into the bed now. Depending on how hot he is, he will choose to sleep on the floor.

We try to have him start on the floor at night. It may take a few tries as he continually jumps into bed. You have to be consistent and keep leading him off the bed.

You can also have the puppy sleep outside of the bedroom.

The Best Training Advice: Leash Training

The Best Puppy Training Advice

My finacé will chime in that I am terrible at this. I let Henri walk me and not the other way around. We went through a lot of different leashes and harnesses before we settled on one we liked. Henri chewed through a lot of leashes.

We found a doodle walking in our neighborhood with this leash and harness we ended up purchasing it. Henri was full-grown at this point so we knew what size to get him. We went with a medium in size olive.

We use Henri’s leash in the house when he gets high energy. It helps calm him down as he stays by my side. The leash is weighted and it makes Henri feel like he can’t move as quickly around the house. It calms him down just like a weighted blanket.

The Best Puppy Training Advice: Puppy Classes

We took one in the city which was good for socialization but I can’t say we learned that much so I can’t recommend it. I learned the most from a Masterclass we watched before we brought Henri home. I do recommend trying a class in your neighborhood or city if you have the time. Good basics are always good to have as a foundation for training your puppy.

Tire your Puppy Out

Puppies have a lot of energy! Walks and playtime are great for getting out that extra energy. You can also give your puppy a bone. The chewing will keep their attention and tire them out. Just make sure to choose one that works well for your puppy.

If it doesn’t work with your schedule consider puppy play dates, schedule a dog walker, or puppy daycare. We are working on getting Henri scheduled for a swim class with some of his neighborhood dog friends. And we recently added a dog walker for days when we need it in our schedule. We have someone we love and trust in our neighborhood. Ask around on Nextdoor or other dog friends for recommendations on everything from groomers, pet sitters, and dog walkers. Your neighbors and friends with dogs are the best resources. Our dogs are part of the family from day one and you want to make sure they are well taken care of. ❤

A few random pieces of advice: The Best Puppy Training Advice

Brush your dog’s teeth. Henri uses these dental chews. I give them to him in the afternoon when he is a bit restless and I need to get work done. It takes him a few minutes to make it through one chew.

Bring home a blanket or article of clothing that was rubbed on the dog’s mom. The puppy will likely have separation anxiety. We had a little blanket and toy that was given to us by Henri’s breeder. You may also want to put a t-shirt with your own scent in the dog’s crate once they get used to you.

I hope this post has been helpful. If there is anything I am forgetting, please comment below and share your own puppy training tips.

Henri is officially 8 months old! You may be thinking how is this month a significant number? I got Henri when he was two months old which officially makes me a dog mom for six months! He has been with me in his forever home in Chicago for the last six months and I couldn’t be happier.

We have had our challenges with potty training and chewing. I may have lost a few chairs and a shoe or two in the past couple of months. Overall, he is the best companion and buddy I could ever ask for. His breed is known for having separation anxiety and I think the feeling is mutual. Wherever he goes, I want to go and vice versa. He follows me around the house and I honestly love it. I just have to plan my moves strategically. When he is sleeping, I rethink getting up just so I can squeeze in a few more minutes of work.

Henri has recently found his bark. He didn’t bark for the first few months and it was so great! He finally found that he makes noise and can voice his opinion and fears of danger with a loud bark. He loves to protect me when he hears any noise and he barks at his own shadow or reflection in the mirror. He doesn’t like going on late-night walks because it scares him and he pulls to go home quickly.

I am very lucky because he is the friendliest dog. We love to go on walks to find friends to play with. He has a few girlfriends in the neighborhood and he has a doodle next door which is now one of his best buddies!

His favorite toys include this puzzle I found on Amazon. He taps it when it isn’t full so he can play the game and discover any treats. I also picked up some bones at my local grocery which keeps him busy. He loves to play ball and I will often find him playing by himself. He keeps the ball in his mouth and tosses it and then picks it up and does it again. Henri loves playing fetch with me and could do it for hours if I let him.

To all of those who have followed along and sent love to Henri over the past few months, thank you. I am so grateful for this sweet and furry addition to my life.

I am already brainstorming ideas for his first Halloween. What do you think Henri should be this year?

It is crazy to believe my sweet boy is six months! He came home with me four months ago and life has been so much different. He makes me smile every day and he is so full of love. He used to sleep on his beds or by the door for naps but lately, I have found him sleeping on the couch which just makes me laugh so hard. This house has become Henri’s house and I just live here.

He has been an absolute joy to have around and he always keeps me on my toes wanting to go for a walk or play ball (over and over). He loves every single squeaking toy he can find and loves to do it mostly when I am on calls or late at night.

Henri has been loving puppy class and knows when we are close because he tugs the leash so hard until we arrive at the door to see his friends. He has an adorable girlfriend Ruth who he meets in the park for playdates and puppy class.

We have been visiting the market since the recent reopening and Henri loves greeting all the vendors and puts a smile on everyone’s face.

His new skill lately is counter surfing. He is tall enough to reach the kitchen counter and is always trying to jump up for chicken or cheese.

Henri has come to love my friend Tammy and knows which door is hers when we go for walks and always has to check if she is home and can play.

If you ask Henri a question, he tilts his head like he is listening and it is the cutest face. He is very smart, loving, and just the best addition to my life.

Henri and I are filming a video in Chicago next month so you can see him in action with me. It will be so fun to create this story together.

Henri had a lot of fun milestones this month.

I spent time visiting family and he had his first night away from home. He was well cared for with two other dogs and I don’t know if he was ready to go home. I missed him so much!

He lost some of his baby teeth. He has a gummy cute smile and all 4 of his big fang teeth are gone.

He had his first puppy class! Now that I am fully vaccinated, I felt more comfortable taking him to a class. We meet on the weekends and he gets to play with other puppies his age and learn useful training tips. We have only had one so far so I can’t say if it has been worth the investment and if I would recommend it just yet.

He finally made it up on the bed. You know I have been waiting for this moment. He did it all on his own with a running jump right to my pillow. I let him lay for a bit before moving him to his crate.

He has a lot of favorite spots to lay around the house. He loves the little spot under my desk and next to where I work in the kitchen. He follows me just about everywhere. The other day, I heard him making his sleeping noises and I thought he was in his usual spot and I found him sleeping on the couch! I couldn’t stop laughing. He loves to watch TV on the couch at night. It’s our ritual before bed. He snuggles up on me and moves around a bit.

Henri has sat on a few video calls this month. I had an interview for a video job and Henri was a hit. Fingers crossed we get the gig. They agreed that he had to be a part of the project if we were selected.

He loves playing ball in and out of the house. When he wants to play with me, he will pick up the ball and push it onto my leg until I pick it up and throw it. You can’t say no to that face.

The first few months of having a puppy were challenging. I had no idea how much work it would be. I know people warned me but I truly thought I could handle it. Once we got into a routine and Henri was vaccinated and could go on long walks and play with other dogs it made life so much easier. I tell him every day how lucky I am to have him by my side. He has been the best companion for me. ❤

It was a BIG week for Henri. He officially turned 4 months this week on Thursday. He had his vet checkup and he is in perfect health weighing in at 20.6 pounds. The vet says to double the 4-month weight so he will be around 40 pounds give or take. We were thinking maybe 30/35 when we got him so this is a bit bigger than expected. He has been fully vaccinated and is free to roam around the streets of Chicago and play with other dogs at the dog park. He is VERY social so I know he is thrilled about this. I have plans for him to meet two of my friend’s dogs soon.

henri and me bowtie puppy

One of my oldest and closest friends was married this week and to be safe it was an intimate wedding that was shared via Zoom. Since I could watch from home, Henri was my plus one! I got him a bowtie for the occasion. He enjoyed a bone while I cried and watched one of my best friends get married. She found love during this crazy year and I couldn’t be happier for her.

Henri got a Haircut

henri and me everyday parisian

I went in with specific instructions on how to cut Henri’s hair. Not too short, but he is hot (panting at night) so he needed a cut. I wanted to keep his cute little brown eyebrows that I love so much. The woman repeated the directions back to me and I left to go get work done at home. I had a call and then he was ready to be picked up. He has literally been by my side the last 9 weeks so not having him at home felt really odd.

I ran to pick him up. They were disorganized and couldn’t find his paperwork. I hated seeing all the dogs in cages and I heard barking and crying so I panicked. I looked quickly and there he was in a cage. They pulled him out and he looked like he had stepped under a blow dryer in a Disney movie. It was SO bad I started laughing then crying and a mixed laugh and cry. I quickly checked out and ran. Poor Henri…

I hear it will go down a bit and grow out. The worst part is they shaved off most of his cute eyebrows. The one thing I wanted them to keep. He kissed me once we were reunited so I know he didn’t hate me that much. On our walk home, we stopped by the cleaners and she has a full-length mirror. He did a check and he still loved himself so that made me feel good. I made up for it with peanut butter treats and chicken at home.

Henri has officially been with me for two months! I remind him every Friday that it is another week with me. He is a mini Bernedoodle (for those that will ask) he is around 20 lbs now and growing. The vet says to double his weight at 4 months so I am guessing he will be around 40 lbs full grown. I feel like every morning I take him from his crate he has grown.

IMG_3450.jpg

He is starting to lose his puppy teeth and has gummy spots in his mouth. He is teething and uncomfortable like any baby going through a transition. He has puppy crazies at night and is the sweetest thing when he is tired and wants to cuddle. He loves chicken more than just about anything. Every time the fridge opens, he runs from the other room just to sit and see if there is something for him. He loves to run and I hate it. I compromised and have bought running shoes and we run one or two blocks home. This helps me build my strength and push him through to get tired enough to rest at home so I can work again.

Henri loves watching TV at night and is enjoying Stanley Tucci and HGTV right now. Any dog he sees on the TV Henri stops and stares. He would love more than anything to have permission to be on the bed at night but he just isn’t there yet with potty training.

His favorite spot is in the corner just under my desk. There are times when I can’t find him and I finally look under the desk and there he is asleep.

IMG_3531.jpg

IMG_3466.jpg

Recently, Henri jumped up on the couch in the front room on his own and I walked in and he was sitting there. He wasn’t sure if he was in trouble or I would be happy so he waited and just looked at me until he wagged his tail. I couldn’t help but smile and laugh because he was so proud of himself.

Having a puppy comes with challenges. I had no idea it was SO hard. My sister warned me when I told her I was getting a puppy but I didn’t believe it. I struggle to manage work and give Henri the attention he wants. He is still a puppy and is testing his boundaries. There are moments when I am on a call and I can’t give him my full attention and he gets into something he shouldn’t or he stares at me and pees in the corner. 😂

_MG_0286.jpg

_MG_0291.jpg

The hard parts are nestled between snuggles on the couch, lots of kisses, and the cutest face following me around the house all day. Life is better with Henri! He has been such a bright spot in a hard year and I am so grateful that he is by my side and has given me something to smile about each and every morning.

IMG_3591[1].jpg

Henri has his last shot at the vet next week and then I would love to do a socially distanced meetup in Chicago at a park. I will do this very informally in my neighborhood if people want to join. Henri loves people, babies, and other dogs and would love to meet YOU!

This post includes affiliate links that help contribute to Henri’s dog treat fund. Merci!

If you are wondering where the Henri updates and photos are, we are a little behind. Having a puppy at this stage is like having a toddler. OMG is he a lot of work. Henri hates when I open my laptop (see photo below) and prefers we play instead of work. If only this were the case! We are having so much fun together, and everything is very new and exciting.

henri and me everyday parisian

A little backstory on Henri because I get asked the same questions a lot. Henri is a Mini Bernedoodle. The vet estimated him around 30 lbs full grown at his last check-up but it all depends on his 4-month weight. Right now he had a solid growth spurt so that final weight might go up. He is perfect just the way he is and I love him the size he is right now.

We had a few weeks of significant snowfall in most of February and it is finally melting. Henri loved the snow so much. He would go out and play and run around and even stick his face right in it. He would come in covered in tiny snow pieces and I had to dig ice out of his little paws.

henri and me

He is growing so fast. I feel every time he wakes up and gets out of his crate, he is bigger. How is that possible?

henri and me

henri and me

I picked him up a new bed this past week because his old bed was way too small, yet he still loves the old original bed more than anything else I buy him.

henri and me everyday parisian

henri and me

I expanded his crate so he has a much bigger space to sleep. Sometimes, I will find him in there just because he loves it. I joke that he puts himself in time out.

He is headed to the vet for his second shot and hopefully, we will be able to socialize him more with other dogs. We just started going for walks and it really tires him out which is a good thing for both of us. We were able to get a nap on the couch together once when he was very tired. He is slowly making his way to the couch, but not the bed just yet. You will remember he had an accident once he got on my white sheets and I had to make a late-night laundry wash and dry before we could get to bed on a Sunday night.

IMG_2972[1].jpg

Update: Since I didn’t get this post out until after his vet check. Henri weighed in at 17 lbs! I knew he was growing but, that is a big jump from the little 11 lbs guy I had just a month previous.

He has one more shot before he can start socializing in late March, early April.

His favorite toys are this green ball, his lamb (which he on his second one), and these Nylabones have been a lifesaver. I ended up buying a big bag at Target his week. He loves to play catch in the house. When he runs to get the ball his little legs slip under him on the floor. I throw him the ball or a toy and he runs to get it and then runs straight back to me with a little love push and puts his face in my chest and sits on my lap. It is the cutest thing! I wish I could video it.

Everyone told me it was going to be a lot of work. I knew it would be but I totally thought I could handle it. The last couple of weeks of cold temperatures and crazy puppy energy has been a challenge. His love and snuggles completely make up for all the trouble he causes during the day.

Thank you so much to all of you and your sweet words, message, and love to Henri. He sends puppy kisses and loves you right back.

Today officially marks three weeks with Henri! He is growing so fast. I love him tiny and I wish he would stay this way for long. He had his checkup with the vet this past week and he came in at 11.2 pounds. She is guessing he will be full-grown at around 30 pounds. He is a mini Bernedoodle. His mom was 50 pounds and his dad was 20 pounds.

henri bernedoodle everydayparisian

Henri is so sweet, adorable, and playful. He is in his destructive puppy phase and he is out of the sleep all day cuddle phase. He has spurts of energy throughout the day and right after dinner and then he gets sleepy around 9 pm. He loves to chase balls in the house, he finds every bit of paper (toilet paper, tissue, and paper towels) to play with, and he has a shoe fetish. If he wants attention, he will grab my shoes from anywhere he can find them.

henri bernedoodle everyday parisian

He only has one shot so far so I am keeping him close to home. We have had snow and more snow and now freezing cold temperatures in Chicago. He hasn’t gone for any walks yet, but that should change after he finishes his shots.

henri bernedoodle everydayparisian

Henri was cleared for peanut butter treats and string cheese. Friends have sent him peanut butter treats and he loves them. He just started loving Nyla bones. Thank goodness I can get a little downtime to work. Everyone warned me how much work it was to have a puppy. He likes to put his paws on the computer when I am working and jump in my lap. It isn’t easy writing or working but we are managing and I really like having a coworker for the first time.

Henri’s favorite activity right now is sledding down the snow steps and climbing back up and repeat. I put this video together of him. It makes me laugh so hard! The first time he did it, I almost cried from laughter. Now he just does it all the time and prefers if I watch him do it.

henri bernedoodle puppy everyday parisian

He finally grew out of his little bed that was almost too small when he arrived home. He still loves squeezing into it but now he prefers the larger bed I got for him with his name on it. If I put the tv on at night, he will watch it.

We are not potty trained yet. Hopefully soon! The cold weather and snow don’t help things. My seven-year-old niece Emma is trying to problem solve how we can potty train him. We have had some funny conversations! I hope these photos of Henri make you smile. He is been a very fun addition to my life.

You can see what we were up to last week here!

Henri is settling in nice at home and his toys are everywhere! He seems to enjoy shoes and the cardboard from paper towels the best. He is starting to sleep through the night. Yes!! We have a bedtime routine we are getting into and I think that helps.

He still hasn’t adjusted to the new big bed I got him, he prefers to snuggle in the too-small puppy bed. He loves laying by the door most of the day.

He loves the snow and we have had a good amount in his first week. I took him out in the back to go to the bathroom and he found a basketball and he started running around with it. It was the funniest thing! I posted the video on Instagram if you want to see it here.

A very funny Henri story, I pulled him into bed the other night. I swore he wasn’t going to get on the bed until much later but he was all sleepy and cute and I really wanted to cuddle while reading my book. He stirred around a bit found a spot and looked at me. He then got up and started crying and just peed the all-white bed! This was at 9:30 at night so then I had to strip the bed and wash and dry everything. Sorry Henri, but we need to get control of our bladder before you can cuddle on the bed. 😂

Henri recently discovered the toilet paper in the bathroom and he pushed the whole roll off with his nose. The look on his face was hilarious and I couldn’t help but let out a laugh. I need to watch him so he doesn’t think this is a toy. He needs to be watched pretty carefully. When he is quiet or I can’t find him, he is usually doing something he shouldn’t. Just like a kid.

We are still working on potty training but he is doing really well. I just got him a bell for by the door. He goes on command if I get him out in a timely matter. He has mastered sit, treat, and paw! Also, he is working his way up and down the stairs. He moves quite quickly now. I feel like he is growing up so fast. He may only be 8lbs but I like him this tiny. Perfect for snuggling.

Henri and I thank you for all the puppy love. ❤

Some questions I am getting about Henri are probably good to answer here.

How big will Henri get?

Henri’s mom was 50lbs and his dad was 20 lbs. Yes, you can laugh about that one! I am hoping he is around 35 lbs but I don’t know for sure. I will ask the vet his prediction after his check-up.

Feeding Henri

I have had a lot of suggestions for table scraps and people snacks for Henri. I have kept the food he was suggested to eat from the breeder and the same treats. Bernedoodles have very sensitive stomachs and he is still a small puppy. I will wait for the all-clear from the vet on what is best for Henri.

Meet HENRI! I have been waiting almost a month to introduce you to him and his arrival was top secret. I picked him on Friday in Indiana and it didn’t feel real until he was in my arms. He kissed me first thing and it was pretty much love at first sight.

I have wanted a dog for so long but my previous place didn’t allow dogs. After I moved last year, it became a possibility.

I grew up with a dog when I was about 10 we got a German Shorthaired Pointer and she was around well until my college years. She got me through my parent’s divorce and so much more. My mom got a puppy when I was in college and we had two German Shorthaired Pointers for a few years. It wasn’t the same since I didn’t live at home.

I met Henri’s breeder through Facebook and was given a choice between three different boy dogs. I already had the name picked out so I knew it would be a boy. Henri had white markings on his front and back paws which made him stand out to me.

Henri is 8 weeks old and is 7 pounds of fluff and love. He is a Bernedoodle.

We have stuck at home mostly but so far we have had a few firsts and a lot of fun. He loves to Netflix and chill with me on the floor. I haven’t allowed him to get on the furniture yet.

First Bath

He came home smelling like his brothers and sisters and he sat on me the whole ride home. It was time to give him a bath! He hated it and I laughed the whole time.

First Walk

Our first walk didn’t last long and I ended up carrying him to the corner and back again.

This Patagonia was a holiday gift and so needed on the cold days of Chicago. I know I will wear and own it for the next 5 years or so. Right now I am taking Henri out in the middle of the night and it is easy and warm to put this on as I run out the door. Plus, these Uggs I bought to give me life on a snowy day and keep my toes warm.

First Snow

Henri’s first snow happened Saturday morning. I took him out at 6:30 am and there was a blanket of snow on the ground. He played in it and loved jumping around in the snow.

First Night at Home

I am crate training Henri mostly for sleeping and when I am eating so he doesn’t beg at my feet. Since he is a little one, he is hard to keep track of and he moves quickly! His breeder gave me a blanket with the mom’s scent on it and I added a stuffed puppy. He went down pretty well the first night once the lights and TV went off.

I have had a few orders into Target and Chewy.com for dog supplies before his arrival. His bed is too small but his crate is a good size for him with a puppy divider. I just ordered him a monogrammed larger puppy bed for him to grow into. He loves this little lamb which my nephew has his own version of. Bobby and Emma were very excited to meet Henri over Facetime. It provided a good source of entertainment this weekend for the whole family. My mom and sister both have dogs and they have been helping with questions and advice.

I can’t wait for you to join me on the adventures of Henri and me. This is exactly what I needed. In the few short days, he has provided so much love and cuddles something I was missing and needed after a tough 2020.

Please feel free to lay on ALL the puppy advice. Potty training tips would be GREAT! I would also love to know small businesses and companies to support that have dog supplies.

I did sign up for Masterclass for a dog training class.
